VR/AR-CHRIS MILK

Senior Project: 360 3D VR Animation Music Video

Process and Reflection

Concept Development

Inspired by Chris Milk’s belief that VR fosters empathy, my senior project 360 3D VR animation music video aims to immerse viewers in a world where they experience music emotionally, not just visually. Milk’s idea of VR as an “empathy machine” influenced my approach to create a music video that surrounds the audience, making them feel part of the narrative rather than passive observers.

I began by selecting emotionally compelling music and designing an animated world that responds to the music’s rhythm and tone, focusing on how visuals can enhance emotional connection.

Empathy Through Immersion

Drawing on Milk’s work “Clouds Over Sidra” which uses VR to evoke empathy, I’m designing an immersive experience that engages viewers’ senses and emotions. Every elements from color to movement is crafted to deepen the viewer’s connection with the music. The goal is for the audience to feel emotionally moved and inspired by the artistic world, much like how Milk’s work fosters a sense of presence and empathy.

The Commerce of Art

Milk’s idea of balancing art and commerce guided my thinking about the commercial potential of my project. While my 360 music video is a creative expression, I’m also considering how it can find a place in the broader media landscape through Blender and Unreal Engine. Platforms like YouTube 360 or VR streaming services could help bridge the gap between artistic innovation and commercial success.

Waiting for the Holodeck

Finally, Milk’s idea of “waiting for the holodeck” reflects how immersive technology is still evolving. While VR offers exciting possibilities, technical challenges remain. However, like Milk, I see my project as part of a larger exploration into the future of immersive media, where innovations will continue to push the boundaries of storytelling.

Conclusion

Chris Milk’s philosophies on empathy especially the intersection of art and commerce and the future of VR have significantly influenced my project. My 360 3D VR animation music video aspires to evoke emotional connections through immersive experiences, aligning with Milk’s vision of VR as a transformative storytelling tool.
